This is the first of four volumes. The goal of the book is to understand the theorems of William Thurston, which Thurston developed in the 1970s and early 1980s but never published. In this first volume, Hubbard (Cornell U. and the U. of Provence) sets up the necessary Teichmüller theory, including the complex analytic theory and hyperbolic geometry. Readers are assumed to have a year of graduate mathematics. Matrix Editions is a new small publisher located in Ithaca, New York, specializing in mathematics.
