Fire-fighting operations by fire brigades in onshore wind turbines are almost impossible because of their height and resulting difficulty of accessing them. For this reason, fire prevention, early detection and early fighting of a fire, and the self-rescue of persons present in the installations during a fire are key considerations.
Fire-fighting operations of fire brigades are limited to preventing the spread of fires to the area surrounding the wind turbine. If personnel is present in the installation, firstresponse fire-fighting with portable fire extinguishers is possible under certain circumstances.
If necessary, fire extinguishing systems and fire detection systems can be used for shutting down the wind turbine, protecting persons and signalling alarm. If the use of extinguishing systems is planned, then dedicated protection systems for selective safeguarding against previously defined fire risks within the installation are recommended.
